For The Bridge Community Church’s summer sermon series, the plan was to spend three months exploring through the miracles of Christ. Water to wine, feeding the 5,000, giving sight to the blind, that sort of thing. Having come off of a very clean, minimal, bright series in EMOJIS, I wanted to get back to something a little less polished. I spent a good amount of time thinking about the mystery behind Jesus’ miracles – how confused people would have been, seeing these things that throughout the rest of their lives would have been ordinary but seeing them in a bizarre, warped perspective that they likely couldn’t entirely make sense of.
That’s where this artwork came from. The grittiness, the images that look familiar but not enough to have any kind of certainty, the moody gradients and the lack of symmetry or order are how I’ve translated it might have felt to witness these supernatural events.
